Unions

The decline of union representation of private sector employees, which commenced in the early 1980s, shows no sign of ending. However, a significant number of employees continue to be represented by unions, and current union leadership is committed to significantly increasing union organizing. In today's environment, with a positive human resource approach and a proactive method in dealing with employment issues, it is more possible than ever before to maintain a nonunion business and still be in full compliance with all laws regulating the workplace. An essential aspect to maintaining a union-free work force is to understand the process by which unions organize and to educate management on how to lawfully and rapidly respond. Even if employees choose to be represented by a union, it is quite possible, with an enlightened approach, to maintain a profitable and competitive business. SWERDLOW FLORENCE SANCHEZ SWERDLOW & WIMMER has over 100 years' experience in advising employers on effectively and legally maintaining a union-free work force and in maintaining a successful and competitive business where employees have chosen to be represented by a union.
